The Cliff Series · Part 5

Most cybersecurity vendors compete for the same Tier 1 GTM talent, with the same story.
Fresh funding. Customer momentum. Killer tech (the old paradigm shift).
The problem is that the professional on the receiving end is hearing the same story multiple times over. They all start blending together. So even a truly promising company and opportunity gets passed over.
Tier 1 GTM cyber pros don’t fully read most recruiter messages by default.
They scan the first line for signs of credibility. Company name, why the opportunity is relevant to them, what is the differentiator?
Most messages don’t have it, and therefore won’t resonate, especially with someone who’s been pitched by three other funded vendors this quarter.
What gets a response is context the recruiter already knows. The impact of the tech. The buyer dynamic. The specific reason this company isn’t the last five that pitched the same story.
That kind of context isn’t researched, it accumulates. It takes years inside the category and hundreds of conversations with industry operators to really understand a market.
Without it, recruitment is spray and pray. And in those scenarios, Tier 1 talent pools smell it a mile away.
Credibility is the key.
Knowing which topics matter to industry professionals right now and building a story around them is what gets their attention.
A funded vendor can’t control how crowded the talent market is. It can control its story and who delivers it.
The employment value proposition deserves the same rigor as the customer pitch. Which topics matter, what makes this company different from the last five that reached out, and why this role at this stage. Get that right, put it in the hands of someone with real standing in the category, and the outreach starts landing with the people who ignore everything else.
This is the fifth piece in a series on how cybersecurity vendors build GTM teams. Earlier pieces cover the market math behind the talent pool, the two standards of recruitment, recruitment vs. hiring, and where hires fall apart in the interview process.
